Apple Enters Automotive?

More rumours surround Apple and its interest in venturing into the automotive industry. A latest report has stated the technology company has made inquiries about a former navy base that was converted into a testing ground for self-driving cars.

Apple is a company best known for making iPhones and Mac computers, but several rumours have surfaced this year pointing to the company’s interest in entering the automotive market as well.

In February this year, the Wall Street Journal made mention of unnamed sources who said Apple had begun working on designs for an electric vehicle to be sold under the Apple brand. While analysts say the company has sufficient funds for such a venture, others believe the company would be more interested in developing software for use in cars, similar to that by Google.

There had also been a scandal lawsuit that surfaced where a Massachusetts company that manufactured electric car batteries sued the tech company for poaching their engineers.

In this recent rumour, of supposed interest to the tech company is the GoMentum Station automotive testing facility, previously a naval weapons station. The facility that has all infrastructure of a city—buildings, streets and intersections—but without people.

According to Jack Hall, programme manager for connected vehicles and autonomous vehicles at the facility, an agreement with Honda already exists to let the automaker use GoMentum Station to test automated vehicle systems. Apple on the other hand, has only “shown interest”, and no agreement has been reached at present nor have the company’s representatives visited yet.

With all these rumours, it would be interesting to see how the situation plays out and only time will tell if Apple has indeed confirmed to venture into the automotive industry.
