South Korea has overtaken China as the largest exporter of steel products to India in the first quarter of 2016-17, after trailing the latter for the last two fiscals, according to the Indian government.

In the April-June quarter in 2016-17, South Korea exported 511,000 tonnes of steel to India, marginally higher than that exported by China at 510,000 tonnes. Japan was at 300,000 tonnes, while Russia was at 170,000 tonnes.

As per the data presented in the Upper House, the four countries together accounted for more than three-fourths of the steel exported to India during the quarter under review.

In 2015-16, China exported 4.13 million tonnes of steel followed by South Korea (3 million tonnes), Japan (2.1 million tonnes) and Russia (364,000 tonnes). China was also the top exporter in 2014-15, and in 2012-14.
