AirAsia, one of the biggest budget carriers in Southeast Asia, is looking to add five aircrafts this year and as many as 10 more in 2017. The airline plans to tap demand in a region that is projected to surpass the US as the world’s biggest air-travel market in two decades, a demand that is led by China.

"We see the strongest growth in China," said chairman Kamarudin Meranun.

Currently, the airline has about 170 aircraft in its fleet. It is one of among other airlines in the region that are adding more aircrafts as economic growth and rising incomes have made air travel more affordable.

Last month, Xiamen Airlines ordered 10 single-aisle jets worth US$851 million from Boeing, while the US plane maker and its rival Airbus split a US$9.9-billion order for wide-body jetliners from China Eastern Airlines.
