Chinese Steel Manufacturers Facing Indictment Over Espionage Conspiracy

Pangang Group, a Chinese steel manufacturer, faces renewed U.S. criminal charges over allegations that it attempted to obtain confidential trade secrets from DuPont and obtained access to hacked information from them.

In 2014 Walter Liew, a California businessman, had already sentenced to 15 years in prison for stealing DuPont trade secrets in a bid to aid Pangang’s development of a white pigment to be used in a wide range of products.

The new indictment reveals that Pangang and computer hackers worked together with Walter to obtain the secrets.

The company, now under allegations of espionage conspiracy and attempted economic espionage, was first charged by the U.S. department of Justice back in 2012.

The indictment was ultimately stalled as the judge ruled legal insufficiency on attempts to notify the company of the charges.

DuPont responded to the incident with the statement “We continue to strengthen our controls on cyber security threats, and will continue to take aggressive steps to protect our intellectual property”
