ABB has won a US$52 million robots order to boost the flexibility and efficiency of Changan Ford Automobile Company Limited’s new China production facility located in Harbin. The robots will used to make Ford’s new Focus model.

The robots provided include the IRB 6700 and IRB 7600, and will be used for Ford’s “Body in White” welding production line. The robots will allow increased flexibility in manufacturing in responding to changing consumer sentiment and demand, while also reducing investment costs.

Both companies have had a longstanding relation, and it is pleasing to see ABB’s reputation for good and reliable technology gaining customer recognition, said Pekka Tiitinen, president of ABB’s discrete automation and motion division. Improving industrial productivity will help customers effectively reduce their investment costs, enhance their productivity, and respond to the market needs in a timely fashion, she added.

Besides the robots and the Body-in-White solutions, ABB will also provide Ford a flexible car body conveying system and laser welding system, as well as the robotic Roller Hemming system for production of the vehicle’s four doors and roof.
