Japanese Machine Tool Orders Up In March

The total value of machine tool orders in March was 147.38 billion yen (US$1.23 billion). This was an increase of 12.1 percent compared to February and marked the second consecutive month of growth.

This figure also represented an increase of 14.9 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, with March posting the eighteenth consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

The total amount of orders topped US$1.17 billion for the first time in 3 months since December 2014 and it was the highest record in the past. This also marked the record high amount in March and has passed US$833.67 million for nineteenth consecutive months, thus remained strong.

Both domestic and foreign demands are expected to be driven by a recovery trend in the future. However, we will keep a close watch on the trend of domestic orders and spot orders of electrical and precision machinery from Asia.

Domestic orders rose by 30.6 percent over February, amounting to US$463.67 million. This marked the second consecutive months of increase. Moreover, this figure was an increase of 46.8 percent over the same month of the previous year and marked the twenty-first consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

Looking at major industries, orders compared to February rose by 18.3 percent in industrial machinery, by 49.1 percent in motor vehicles, by 22.4 percent in electrical & precision machinery, and by 49.5 percent in aircraft, shipbuilding & transport equipment.

Foreign orders rose by 3.2 percent over February to US$765.06 million. This marked the second consecutive month of growth. At the same time, foreign orders showed an increase of 1.5 percent over the same month of the previous year, with March posting the seventeenth consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

By region, orders from Asia fell by 2.0 percent from February to US$422.75 million. However, this was an increase of 2.1 percent over the same month of the previous year. Orders from Europe fell by 5.3 percent from February to US$134.16 million. This was an increase of 5.8 percent over the same month of the previous year. Orders from North America rose by 19.6 percent over February, amounting to US$195.94 million. This figure was a decrease of 2.7 percent from the same month of the previous year.
